History of Duduk

Duduk is used to perform Armenian chants and is one of the country’s leading musical instruments. Duduk is a double-reed woodwind instrument that began to be used in Central Asia around 1200 BC and features a warm and soft tone. Called Met or Monauros in Hellenistic Egypt, this wind instrument was known as Aurio during the Anatolian civilization of Mesopotamia. The design is closest to the cultural sound, so it’s a completely local instrument. It is widely used mainly in Armenia and Azerbaijan. This musical instrument was introduced to China and became a musical instrument called a tuber, and was introduced to Japan around the 6th century and became a hichiriki. UNESCO declared Duduk and its music in Armenia as a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage in 2005.
