The pan flute is the ancestor of the pipe organ, but the pan flute itself has been forgotten by Europeans for some time. On the other hand, the pan flute became known among the shepherds of Romania, a small European country, under the name of Nai, an instrument that plays folk music. In the 20th century, there was a movement to review this instrument in Romania, with improvements such as increasing the number of pipes and changing the material to Chinese female bamboo.

In Asia, the pan flute traveled along the Silk Road, entered China, changed in various ways, and developed into Xiao, and the one composed of 18 long and short bamboos that entered Japan became Xiao. In postwar Europe, the Romanian ney player Zamfir began playing in the west, and the pan flute became known throughout Europe. He played not only folk music but also various genres such as classical, jazz, and rock, and became known all over the world. Zamfir’s disciple, Murku, raised many disciples, and Switzerland is now the most enjoyed pan flute country in the world.

Features of pan flute

The pan flute is a mechanism that holds the tube in the vertical direction and makes a sound when the open end of the tube is blown horizontally. Each tube is tuned to a tonic called the fundamental frequency. The Romanian pan flute has a bow-shaped arrangement of tubes, and the player can make all the sounds by simply rotating his head. There are two methods of vibrato, one by hand and one by breath. Hand vibrato allows the player to gently rock one side of the pan flute from the wrist to the hand in a manner similar to violin vibrato. Breath vibrato uses the same technique as a flute or woodwind player.
